About Wrestling
Wrestling is considered to be an important base element of submission grappling and mixed-martial-art competition and also benefits those who train Jiu-Jitsu in the Gi, developing explosive takedowns from standing, clinchwork, balance and pressure from the top position.
Wrestling contains a wide variety of grappling techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds. Wrestlers focus on achieving a superior or dominant position on their opponent, utilising head and wrist control and explosive takedowns to ground and pin the other fighter.
Wrestling is one of the oldest forms of combat and there are many styles with varying technical approaches practiced all over the world. Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling are both popular styles and Olympic sports. The American Collegiate style is the base art for many American mixed martial artists and submission grapplers, although elements from all three styles are found in submission grappling and MMA competition, each having their own strengths and weaknesses. For example, Greco-Roman wrestling forbids attacking the legs in any way and focuses on throws and clinch work.
